San Pedro de Atacama, Chile

SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA, CHILE

After an amazing journey through the salt flats, we arrived in Chile on Saturday. Fairly easy border crossing, besides them taking our oranges and bananas. What a culture shock leaving Bolivia and entering Chile. We heard that Chile was the most American like country, but we didn't expect so close to stateside prices too. $40 for a hostel, come on! That's like motel 6 prices. Anyways, we stayed in a desert town called San Pedro in the Atacama desert, the driest desert in the world. The town kinda reminds us of Santa Fe, or some other southwestern city. We booked a tour for our second day, to go sandboarding and check out some caves in the parque. What a blast that was! Sandboarding is like snowboarding but you dont go as fast, and chairlifts are replaced by your hiking legs. The caves were cool too and we hiked up a dune to watch the sunset! More Chile updates to come!

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

SALAR DE UYUNI - THE LARGEST SALT DESERT IN THE WORLD

Day 1 - Train Cemetary

From Sucre we took an 8 hour bus ride to Uyuni, the desert town bordering the salt flats. Not much in this town, just a jumping off point to see some spectacular views in the desert. Our first stop on our tour was an old train cemetary, where decades old train and train parts have been left to rust in the desert sun.

Gotta get the workout in

Next we visited the salt museum and learned how the salt was processed. After that we had lunch by mounds of salt, the salt is raked into mounds for ease of pickup and transportation. We also visited a spot where there were a bunch of flags put there by fellow travelers, no USA flags though, we shoulda brought one had we known. We then had a chance to take some cool photos with a beautiful desert backdrop. After the photos, we visited Inca Huasi (Fish Island) to see the giant cacti and have great views of the salt flats all around.

Day 2

The next day we drove through the Chuguana desert past some extinct volcanoes and the semi active Ollague volcano. We then had a lunch by a laguna where there were a ton of flamingoes, in the middle of the dessert! Crazy! After lunch we drove to the "tree of rock", then onto our final destination of the day, Laguna Colorada. Laguna Colorada was an amazingly colored red lake, there we slept in a dorm for the night.

Day 3

The last day we woke up at 4am to get an early start, but boy was it cold. -7 celcius that morning, brr!Our first stop was "Sol de MaƱana" geysers to see the bubbling mud pools and the steam jets. After the geysers we continued on to some much needed hot springs for a dip. Warmed up now, we headed to the "Dali desert" and onto our final destination of the tour, Laguna Verde (Green Lake). We arrived at the Bolivia-Chile border around 10am and made it to San Pedro, Chile in the Atacama Desert around 12pm. Chile updates to come!!!!!

La Paz and Sucre- Bolivia

LA PAZ, BOLIVIA

Well after a 3 hour bus ride bordering beautiful Lake Titticaca and a 15 minute ferry ride across the lake, we arrived in the de facto capital of Bolivia, La Paz. We stayed at the only hostel-brewery in the world, Adventure Brew Hostel. La Paz is an awesome city siting at 12,000 ft above sea level, and you can certainly feel the altitude after a couple of beers at the hostel. We spent two nights in the city, walking around the witches market, sightseeing, and buying cheap food. One day Amanda didn´t feel so well (a cold), so Cory went to the witches market and bought a vile of some eucaliptus, and it cleared her right up. On the third day we caught a bus (14hours) to the old colonial capital of Sucre. Adios La Paz!

SUCRE, BOLIVIA
Sucre reminded us lot of Cusco, Peru, a former clonial capital of a country replaced by a new more modern capital city. It has a main tree-lined square surrounded by churches and beautiful colonial buildings. We stayed at nice hostel where we met some cool people, a Swede, an Italian, and some Georgia boys. We walked around Sucre´s great outdoor market, booked our trip to the Salt Flats, and had a chance play walleyball (like volleyball but indoors using walls). After two nights in Sucre, we headed to Uyni to embark on our 3day/2night tour of the largest salt flat in the world!
